Most content refresh advice amounts to "update it periodically," which isn't specific enough to act on. The real question is which pages, which changes, and how you'll know it worked — that's what a refresh strategy actually needs to answer.
Content decay is the default, not the exception
A page that ranked well a year ago and has quietly lost 20-30% of its traffic since, with no obvious cause, isn't unusual — it's the normal lifecycle of content in a competitive topic. Newer pages get published, existing pages get updated by competitors, user expectations shift, and a page that was comprehensive 18 months ago is now merely adequate. This is worth internalizing because it reframes the goal: a refresh isn't fixing something broken, it's competing again in a field that moved while the page stood still.
Which pages to prioritize
Not every declining page deserves refresh effort. Prioritize by two signals together:
- Ranking position 4-15 for the target keyword. A page here is close enough to page one that a real improvement can move it. A page stuck at position 40+ usually has a more fundamental problem (thin content, wrong intent match, weak site authority) that a refresh alone won't fix — that's a rewrite-from-scratch or delete decision, not a refresh.
- Traffic or ranking decline over the last 6-12 months, not just low absolute traffic. A page that's always been modest but stable isn't decaying — it's just not a priority target. Decline is the signal that something changed relative to the page, not the page's absolute performance.
Cross-reference against business value too — a declining page in a topic adjacent to your product is worth more refresh effort than a declining page that was never going to convert anyone regardless of its ranking.
What a genuine refresh actually changes
The test for a real refresh: would a reader who read the old version and the new version notice a meaningful difference beyond the date? If not, it's not a refresh, it's a timestamp change — and search engines have gotten measurably better at discounting date-only "freshness" signals that aren't backed by substantive edits.
Real refresh work usually includes some combination of:
- Updated facts, numbers, and examples. Stale statistics and dead product references are the most common reason a once-good page starts reading as unreliable.
- Restructured sections based on what's now ranking well. If the top-ranking pages for your target keyword have converged on a structure or set of subtopics your page doesn't cover, that's a gap worth closing.
- Expanded coverage of subtopics that emerged since the original was written. A page about a tool or tactic often needs new sections addressing developments that didn't exist at original publish time.
- Removed or condensed sections that no longer add value. Refreshing isn't only additive — cutting a now-irrelevant section usually helps more than padding around it.
- New or updated internal links reflecting content published since the original went live.
When to consolidate instead of refresh
If you find two or more pages effectively targeting the same search intent — a common outcome of publishing steadily over a few years without a content audit — refreshing each individually is the wrong move. Consolidate them into one stronger page and 301-redirect the others. Splitting ranking signals (links, engagement, topical relevance) across near-duplicate pages weakens all of them; concentrating those signals into one page is usually more effective than improving each one separately.
The signal to look for: two pages ranking for overlapping keyword sets, with neither one clearly outperforming the other. That's rarely a coincidence — it's usually two pages competing with each other as much as with outside competitors.
Measuring whether a refresh worked
Track refreshed pages as their own cohort, separate from new content. A refresh's traffic lift, when it happens, tends to arrive faster than a new page's ranking ramp-up — often within 4-8 weeks rather than the 3-6 months a new page can take to fully mature in the index. Conflating refresh performance with new-content performance in a single "content output" metric obscures which lever is actually working, and refresh work is generally far cheaper per hour than net-new content, so knowing its real ROI matters for where you allocate time.
